1930: New London

An advert showing steel work for 55 Broadway, London, HQ of London Transport

Rubery, Owen's are still a well-known name in the old Black Country - and are still in business albeit it in a very different form. The old works at Darlaston disappeared in the late 20th century as they left the structural and steelworks business that they'd been long associated with. This picture shows a fascinating building under construction - 55 Broadway in London, designed by Charles Holden as the headquarters of the then London Underground Group - it was to become London Transport in 1933 - and London Underground are stil based in this wonderful building. Winner of the 1930 RIBA medal the building, with its superb attention to detail, was for many years the tallest structure in London.

1972: Real London Buses

Daimler Fleetline (1972) and AEC Routemaster 9.1m (1966)

Photographed by Alex-397, on Flickr
at Theydon Bois Transport Bazaar and Running Day on 8th October 2011

The Daimler is probably too modern for the Strangers' World but the other one, a red wonder called Routemaster, is timeless.

Cranes of Old

Deutsche Lufthansa, mentioned in the Prologue, has got a distinctive, eye-catching logo. The crane emblem is usually cradited to Otl Aicher, a man behind Waldi the Dachshund (and Olympic pictograms). It's true that in 1960s Herr Aicher developed a corporate style for Lufthansa but he did not invent the crane, only slightly revamped it. This stylish bird was introduced as early as in 1919! Here are some pre-Aicher cranes:

P38 Revisited

Mark's weapon. Never fired in anger

1972: Real Waldi

Created by Otl Aicher for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Waldi the Dachshund was the first official Olympic mascot. Over two million Waldi-related items were sold around the globe.
In the Strangers' World, the mascot for the Games (also held in Munich) should be more pompous - Bavarian Lion maybe?

Hanussen's Medium

She started her movie career in 1926. In the early Thirties, she worked with Erik Jan Hanussen as his 'assistant'. It was Maria Paudler who voiced the fatal prophecy which sealed the clairvoyant's fate: "I see a house... a big house... it is burning... it burns down... It is meant as a signal for a... a revolt… " Next day, the Reichstag was set on fire, and the rest is history. Real history.
Some trivia: Maria Paudler played the leading role in the first German TV film.

Demotivational Inflation

Here we owe you a short explanation: in the Strangers' World (1930), the effect of postwar reparation on Germany is much softer than in OTL aka Real History. Thus, no billions to burn - less unwise decisions, less reasons for hyperinflation. And healthier economics by the end of the decade.

Her Fragrance

Vivre, a Molyneux perfume created in 1931, was relaunched forty years later, in 1971. Just in time to be mentioned in our "Opera" chapter.

Top notes are aldehydes, coriander, green leaves and bergamot; middle notes are iris, orange blossom, jasmine, hiacynth, ylang-ylang, lily-of-the-valley and rose; base notes are leather, sandalwood, tonka bean, oakmoss, vetiver and myrrh.

1930: Real Calender!

1930's perpetual calendar with steel chrome plated frame, wooden back and base with glass front panel. Found this at Greenwich antique market and picked up a nice bargain, it is in full working order, just needs red masking to be refreshed.
